We encourage regular brushing and dental cleanings to prevent dental disease in your pet.
Dental care is often forgotten when it comes to pet care. Dental hygiene for cats and dogs is equally important as other aspects of their care. Bacteria in the mouth can spread to other parts of the body via the bloodstream and affect important organs. Our team will do our best to get your pet the professional care they need but you also play a part in their dental care. If you would like to improve your pet’s dental health, please call us at 780-481-5678.
Dental disease is a compound term used to define problems with dental health. The disease begins when the mouth is neglected and bacteria from leftover food particles mixes with saliva to form plaque. If this plaque is not removed by brushing, it hardens and becomes tartar which can only be removed by a veterinarian. As plaque continues to build up there is a breakdown in the gums and teeth.
Dental disease cannot be accurately diagnosed just by looking at the teeth. At our hospital we use digital X-rays to look below the gum line. In order to get clear scans your loyal companion will be sedated or put under anesthesia so they can stay in one position. In cases where anesthesia is used, we perform diagnostic tests to eliminate any complications and determine how much anesthesia to use.
