Euthanasia

Euthanasia is a humane end of life option for pets with terminal illness or chronic pain.

Death is the one part of pet ownership that all animal lovers fear happening. Sadly, there is no way we can prevent it. When the time comes it is important that your beloved companion passes away peacefully and gets a proper send off. Mourning the loss of your loyal companion can be incredibly overwhelming. At our hospital we certainly empathize with our clients who have lost their forever friends. Our aim is to alleviate some of the stress that comes with mourning such a profound connection.

How do I know if euthanasia is right for my pet?

Euthanasia is probably one of the most difficult decisions you will make when it comes to your pet’s healthcare. You should know that if your veterinarian discusses euthanasia with you then it’s probably the most humane option for your pet. Our veterinarians will exhaust all care options before suggesting euthanasia. In the end you make the final decision about what happens to your cat or dog. As your pet’s guardian you know when they’ve started to become less like their normal selves. Although palliative care can make their final days comfortable, it’s not an option for long term treatment. Here are signs that your loyal companion is nearing the end of their life:

  • Becoming more withdrawn
  • Less affectionate
  • Sleeping more
  • Eating less
  • Uninterested in activities they once enjoyed

What happens during veterinary euthanasia?

Euthanasia medication is administered through an IV injection and takes effect almost immediately. Within minutes the patient’s brain and heart activity will stop. The procedure is quick and pain-free. If you would like to learn more about the procedure call us at 780-481-5678.

Can I be with my pet during the procedure?

Yes, you can be with your pet during their final moments. Because the procedure is quick, we encourage our clients to spend quality time with their pet before their appointment. For the euthanasia appointment you can bring your pet’s favourite toy or blanket, anything to make them feel loved and at ease.
