Heartworm Testing

Heartworms are deadly internal parasites that can harm your pet’s organs like their heart and lungs.

Heartworms are internal parasites that are extremely dangerous to your pet’s health. It’s quite easy for your pet to get infected as these parasites are spread through mosquito bites. The worms will mature and reproduce while inside your pet. Heartworms can grow up to a foot-long where they can reach important organs like the heart. Dogs are more likely to be diagnosed with heartworms as they are better hosts, however it is still possible for cats to have them.

How are heartworms detected?

Heartworm testing and prevention work hand in hand to keep your pet heartworm free. Even while your loyal companion is on prevention medication they need to be tested regularly. Heartworm testing is performed through a blood test. A small blood sample is required to check for heartworm protein. In some cases, additional testing such as X-rays may be performed to examine the lungs and heart as these organs are generally affected when a patient has heartworm disease.

What are signs of heartworms?

As with all parasites it’s never a good option to wait for signs to get your pet on prevention medication. Heartworms are even more tricky because by the time you begin to notice symptoms the infection has worsened so prevention and regular testing is critical. Some signs include:

  1. Swollen abdomen
  2. Difficulty breathing
  3. Fainting
  4. Loss of appetite
  5. Persistent dry cough
  6. Sudden weight loss
  7. Lack of energy

What is the best way to protect my pet from heartworms?

Following a strict prevention plan is optimal to protect your loyal companion. At our hospital we create prevention plans that include regular testing, medications and vaccines. Ideally each patient should be treated against heartworms every 6 to 12 months. To get your loyal companion started on a heartworm prevention plan, please call us at 780-481-5678.
