Microchipping

Microchipping is a form of permanent identification that helps reunite lost pets with their owners.

No pet parent wants to ever imagine their loyal companion getting lost but it can happen at any time. Smart pet ownership means getting ahead of a possible problem by implanting a microchip. With this device your cat or dog will always have identification that can be traced back to you. In the event that you get separated from them, there’s always a possibility to be reunited with them, even years later.

What are microchips and how do they work?

Microchips are permanent identification that is inserted beneath the skin of your pet. The chip is about the size of a rice grain and is usually implanted at the nape of the neck. Each microchip has a unique barcode that can be read by a special barcode reader which can be found in most veterinary clinics and shelters. Once properly implanted, your contact details must be uploaded to the microchip manufacturer’s database. You must update your contact information as soon as they change. This means that if your lost pet is brought to an animal hospital the microchip can be scanned and you will be contacted. To schedule an appointment to have your pet microchipped, please call us at 780-481-5678.

Is microchipping painful?

The procedure brings minimal discomfort to your pet. The microchip is implanted with a special needle which will feel like a pinch, similar to a vaccine. If your cat or dog is anxious during the appointment they may be sedated so they can remain calm. However, our team is experienced and skilled at implanting microchips. We are very gentle and do our best to make your companion as comfortable as possible. We also encourage our clients to have their pet microchipped during other appointments like a dental cleaning which already uses anesthesia.
