Ultrasound and X-ray

We use modern non-invasive imaging technology to ensure accurate diagnosis for your pet’s ailments.

When you bring in your pet to see our veterinarians you can rest assured that our team will perform all the necessary tests to get an accurate and concise diagnosis. Physical examinations are very helpful but in certain cases we may need to take a deeper look at your pet’s internal systems. The two imaging tools that allow us to diagnose your pet are ultrasounds and X-rays (radiographs).

How do X-rays work?

We have the latest in digital radiology (X-rays) which allows us to obtain the highest quality of diagnostic images, uses less radiation and is much faster than traditional x-ray technology. During a radiograph electrical energy passes through the patient and is absorbed by tissues which results in an image being displayed on screen. X-rays may be recommended or required to provide our veterinarians with valuable information about your pet’s bones, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, heart, and urinary system. We use special positioning cushions to help keep your pet comfortable while they are having their x-rays done.

When are ultrasounds recommended?

Ultrasounds are used to examine soft tissues and internal organs. This technology uses sound waves to create an image which is shown on a monitor. In some cases, to improve the image quality, the area being examined may be shaved. By performing ultrasounds, we can identify fluid in the abdomen, enlarged lymph nodes (cancer), bladder and kidney stones, pregnancy and heart disease. Ultrasounds can also be used to examine the gastrointestinal tract which can determine the cause of vomiting and diarrhea.

Are ultrasounds and X-rays safe?

These procedures have little to no risk. The sound waves used in ultrasounds are completely safe, in some cases your pet may have some skin irritation from shaving or gel application. Radiation exposure can have harmful effects which is why we limit our patients’ exposure. At our hospital we provide digital X-ray which provides quicker results and uses less radiation. This reduces the chances of your loyal companion developing any issues.
