Weight Management

We provide different forms of support to help your loyal companion maintain a healthy weight.

Proper weight management can prevent your cat or dog from developing certain health problems and in turn help you save some money. Here at Lessard Callingwood Veterinary Hospital we encourage our clients to pay close attention to their pet’s weight. Our team can guide you through the different approaches you can take to curb your loyal companion’s weight, whether they are obese or underweight.

When should I be concerned about my cat or dog’s weight?

With routine veterinary exams your veterinarian will indicate when they are concerned about your pet’s weight. Our veterinarians will determine your pet’s body condition score, which factors in their overall size, body frame and muscle mass; this is used to establish whether your cat/dog is obese or underweight. However, as their guardian, most times there will be some signs that your pet is struggling with their weight. Here’s what you should lookout for:

  • Swinging stomach
  • Oval or round shaped when you look at your pet from above
  • Difficulty feeling their ribs because there is too much fat
  • Trouble breathing when walking
  • Changed behaviour such as inactivity

If you are worried about any of these signs in your pet, be sure to call us at 780-481-5678 so that we can assess their condition.

Why is it important to keep my pet at a healthy weight?

Although weight should not be the sole factor to determine if your cat/dog is healthy, being on the wrong side of the scale can shorten their lifespan. As we all know being overweight can cause various health issues. Overweight cats and dogs can suffer from the following health problems:

  1. Diabetes
  2. Arthritis
  3. Heart problems
  4. Skin conditions
  5. High blood pressure
  6. Cancer

Why is my cat or dog losing weight?

Unintentional weight loss can be a sign of an unknown health problem. In any case, dramatic weight loss should be taken seriously and brought to the attention of your veterinarian immediately. Your loyal companion may be losing weight due to internal parasites, medical conditions like cancer, kidney disease, diabetes etc and behavioural situations such as stress, changes in their diet or a new pet in the home.
